Department profile:
About Department
Since 2006, the department has been a guarantor of a study programme called "Biology and protection of 'hobby' organisms". Range of subjects has widened and there are a lot of specialized subjects provided by the department, i.e. phytogeography and zoogeography, taxonomy of the CITES animals, research paper work draw-up principles, anatomy and morphology of plants, plants in terrariums, cactus growing, orchid growing, plants in aquariums, etc.
The Department of Biological Disciplines has its focal point in biology and protection of particular taxons of plants and animals. Research activities are also important for the department. They focus on wetland ecosystems. A complex ecological research has been conducted by the department, in cooperation with the University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Brno and the University of Agriculture in Prague, in the framework of a project led by the Czech Science Foundation. The project deals with Pectinatella magnifica invading waters in the Czech Republic.
Since a new study programme called "Biology and protection of 'hobby' organisms" was accredited, new research opportunities have emerged in that sector. Detection and determination of zoological materials in original ethnographic displays in the Naprstek Museum in Prague is an example of new opportunities that have arisen. The department cooperates with all the other faculties of the University of South Bohemia, research centres of the Czech Academy of Sciences and many other institutions dealing with protection of the environment. Find a list of all the research activities on personal websites of the members of the department. A breeding fish aquarium owned by the Department of Biological Disciplines has been accredited as a "breeding and contractor’s equipment" by the Act No. 246/1992 Coll., and by the Government Decree No. 207/2004 Coll. (2009). Since 2009, it has been a CITES research institution as well.
